Bayern Munich revive their rivalry against Real Madrid in the Champions League this season. The two sides have met frequently in the knockout stages of the European competitions since 1992. Bayern will face the Spanish giants in the semi-final stage of the Champions League this season.
Along with competing on the pitch, the two clubs will be involved in transfer deals during the summer transfer window. Real Madrid reportedly have a concrete interest in Bayern’s Alphonso Davies. The latest report from France suggests that Die Roten are interested in one of Real Madrid’s defenders.
According to L’Equipe (via Onefootball), Bayern are one of the several clubs that have shown interest in Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy. The 28-year-old left-back has one year left on his contract with the Spanish club. Along with Die Roten, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City have also shown interest in the French left-back.
Mendy has been a consistent performer for Real Madrid in the last few seasons. He has won Champions League and La Liga titles with the Spanish club. The French international is an astute defender but not as threatening as Davies in the final third. Considering the contract situation of Davies and Mendy, a swap deal may solve problems for both clubs. However, L’Equipe also reported that Carlo Ancelotti wants Real Madrid to extend Mendy’s contract.
Bayern are resigned to selling Davies in the summer. The Bavarian club made a final contract offer to Davies a few weeks ago. The Canadian defender reportedly wants a superior financial package to stay in Munich. Davies was also given a deadline for the final contract offer. With every passing week, it is becoming more certain that the Canadian full-back will not play in Munich next season.
Mendy is more than a decent left-back option, but Bayern can certainly do better to replace Davies in the summer. They should look for a young left-back to replace Davies. The Bavarian club already has an experienced left-back option in Raphael Guerreiro.
Bayern have been concretely linked with AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez. The French full-back will be expensive since he has several years left on his contract at Milan. Meanwhile, Girona’s Miguel Guiterrez has been heavily scouted by Bayern this season.
Real Madrid reportedly have two agreements in place for Davies. They are ready to wait until 2025 to sign him on a free transfer. Bayern need funds to complete the squad overhaul this summer. They cannot afford to lose Davies on a free transfer. A decision on the Canadian left-back’s future will arrive at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Bayern will continue to explore left-back options in the market.
