Vincent Kompany backs the idea of squad overhaul at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich unveiled Vincent Kompany as the new head coach on Thursday. The long search for the successor of Thomas Tuchel came to an end last week when Bayern started negotiating for Kompany. The Belgian coach became Die Roten’s preferred option after they faced disappointments with four coaches.
Kompany wants Bayern to play an aggressive brand of football under him. They lacked decisiveness in various games last season, which led to their downfall in the Bundesliga and cup competitions. The Belgian coach will play a key role in the squad-building process for the next season.
The club chiefs believe they need a squad overhaul to arrest the collapses in performances and bring the hunger back in the team. According to Kicker (via iMiaSanMia), Kompany also has the same view as Thomas Tuchel about the need for big changes in the squad during the summer transfer window.
Kicker also reports that Bayern are hoping to conclude the majority of their transfer business by the end of Euros on July 15. The club chiefs want the new squad in place for the start of the pre-season tour. It will be a significant challenge to get deals over the line during the European championship.
Bayern are ready to make tough decisions this summer. They will have to part ways with a few senior players to raise funds for the squad rebuild and make space for new players in the wage structure. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has left Bayern on a free transfer. He will not be the only senior player to leave Bavaria this summer.
There are question marks regarding the futures of Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies in the defense. Davies has a contract offer from Bayern on the table. If he rejects this offer, Die Roten will have to reluctantly put him on the transfer list. Upamecano is reportedly a candidate for a transfer away from Munich this summer.
Meanwhile, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are also facing uncertain futures at Bayern. Kimmich will talk to club officials after the Euros since he has 12 months left on his contract. Meanwhile, Goretzka has been subject to interest from Juventus in the last few months. Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry are the candidates for sales in the attacking department of the squad.
Max Eberl refused to give assurances regarding the futures of star players who have been linked with a move away from Munich in the summer. He will sit down with Kompany to make a final decision on several players to start the squad rebuild after a trophyless campaign.
