The transfer talk in Germany over the last couple of days has been dominated by a potential transfer of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club have reportedly held talks with Tah, but Bayer Leverkusen are not keen on losing their star defender to Bayern in the summer transfer window.

Tah will add experience to the defense at Die Roten if a move materializes at the end of the season. The German defender will likely replace one of the center-backs in the squad at Bayern. The latest update from Germany has confirmed the player who may make way for Tah in the summer.

According to Sky Sports in Germany and SportBild, Dayot Upamecano is the top candidate for a transfer away from Bayern in the summer. The French defender’s departure can make space for Jonathan Tah in the squad for next season.

Upamecano’s contract at Bayern comes to an end in 2026. The 25-year-old center-back was part of the starting XI consistently during the first half of the season. However, red cards against Lazio and Bochum in February pushed Upamecano to the bench. The good form of Matthijs de Ligt and Eric Dier has made sure Upamecano had to be content with getting minutes from the bench.

The French international reportedly wants talks with the club chiefs to get clarity about his role in the squad for next season. If Bayern fail to give assurances to Upamecano regarding game time, he may look for a move away from Bavaria.

Upamecano has enjoyed collective success at Bayern since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021. However, he has never shown consistency over the entire season. The Frenchman has shown his quality in patches. Moreover, his performances in big Champions League games have been underwhelming.

Bayern remain interested in Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo. The arrival of two center-backs will mean Die Roten have to cash in for Dayot Upamecano. With two years left on his contract, Rekordmeister can get a significant fee for him. A move away from Bavaria will also help Upamecano to get back to his best after a difficult season.

The Bavarian club is planning a squad overhaul in the summer. Upamecano may not be the only significant departure in the summer. Joshua Kimmich has been heavily linked with a move away from Bavaria, while the future of Leon Goretzka is uncertain. The record Bundesliga champions are reportedly ready to listen to offers for Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry in the summer.
