The next couple of months will see Bayern Munich hold talks with several players in the squad for contract extensions. It does look like the first player to sign a new deal in 2024 for Bayern will be Mathys Tel.

According to L’Equipe (via GFFN), Tel is close to signing a new deal at Bayern. The French forward will be signing a two-year extension on his existing deal. Tel’s new contract will see him stay at Bayern at least until 2029. Sky Sports in Germany have also confirmed reports from France about Tel’s contract extension.

The new deal for Tel confirms how highly Bayern chiefs rate him. Manchester United had reportedly touched base with Tel’s agents to explore a summer transfer a few weeks ago. With game time difficult to come by under Thomas Tuchel, Tel was reportedly ready to weigh up a transfer in the summer.

However, things have changed drastically at Bayern in the last few weeks. The Bavarian club has decided to part ways with Tuchel at the end of the season. Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, held talks with Tel and his agent to give assurances over his role in the first team.

The contract extension does suggest that Tel will be a big part of Bayern’s squad in the coming years. Bayern’s new director of Sport, Max Eberl, also name-dropped Tel when he spoke about building the squad around young players. The Bavarian club moved swiftly to end the speculation around his future.

Mathys Tel has been keen on becoming a big player at Bayern ever since arriving from Rennes in 2022. The French forward was subject to loan interest last summer, but he decided to stay in Munich to learn from senior players in training.

Tel started the season with a bang, chipping in with goals and assists whenever he came off the bench. Despite consistently delivering good cameos, Tuchel was reluctant to start him in the Bundesliga. The French forward made his first league start last week against Freiburg. Tel made the most of the opportunity by scoring a sensational goal in the first half.

The French forward will turn 19 next month. He has all the qualities to develop into an elite forward. Bayern have managed him well until now. The next step for Tel is to start more games from next season. The French forward will hope to get a decent amount of game time in the final phase of the season.
