Bayern Munich has reportedly made a concrete approach for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Bayern Munich has started planning for the future by handing out new deals to Thomas Muller and Alphonso Davies. The club is also in discussions over new deals with Manuel Neuer, Thiago Alcantara, and David Alaba.

Apart from securing the long term future of star players, Die Roten will also be looking to spend big in the summer transfer window. The club is likely to improve its attack, but a couple of acquisitions in defense could be made depending on the departures of Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez.

According to L’Equipe (via GFFN), Bayern has made an approach for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano. The French defender is likely to leave Leipzig in summer as he is set to enter in the final year of his contract. Die Roten were previously linked with a move for him during the winter transfer window.

This report also suggests that Die Roten will face a lot of competition for the French defender. A host of top European clubs such as Manchester United and Real Madrid are also interested in signing Upamecano in the upcoming summer transfer window.

More from Bayern Strikes

Upamecano was also linked with a move to Bavaria last season. The reports hinted that the 21-year-old defender was an alternative option for Die Roten if they fail to land Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid. Hernandez went on to join the club for a club-record transfer fee in summer after failed attempts in January 2019.

RB Leipzig has been a great side defensively in the Bundesliga over the last two seasons. Upamecano has been part of their miserly defense during this period. The French defender is a robust defense who comes out on top in individual duels. He is also composed on the ball and can dribble the ball out of danger from his box.

The report from L’Equipe also suggests that Upamecano wants to play regularly at the new club, so a move to Bavaria doesn’t make sense from his perspective. Die Roten will definitely have Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, and Benjamin Pavard as center-back options next season, making it difficult for Upamecano to get regular playing time.

Die Roten should focus on getting a right-back in summer as Pavard prefers playing in central defense, and they don’t have enough cover in that position. Lukas Mai deserves an opportunity with the first team, so he should be permanently promoted to the first team. Since the transfer window is going to be affected due to coronavirus pandemic, it doesn’t make sense for Rekordmeister to spend heavily on a position that is well covered.
