Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in signing Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

It has been a whirlwind few days for Bayern Munich. The club resumed competitive football against Hertha Berlin in style by registering a 4-0 win. After the win, Die Roten sealed the transfer of Alvaro Odriozola from Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The German champions are unlikely to sign anyone after Odriozola’s arrival. Hansi Flick wanted a winger to be added to the squad, but it is looking unlikely that his wish gets fulfilled. Bayern Munich will start planning for summer transfers as they will continue the rebuild of the first-team squad.

Defense was addressed last summer and this month, but the recent reports from Germany suggest that Die Roten may add one more defender in the next transfer window. According to SportBild, Bayern Munich is interested in signing Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

The information from SportBild has also been confirmed by TZ’s Manuel Banko and Sky Sports.  Upamecano’s contract with RB Leipzig is set to expire in 2021, so the German club may listen to offers for the French defender.

More from Bayern Strikes

Upamecano is one of the finest young defenders in Europe. The French defender is excellent in duels with forwards, and his passing is also good. Arsenal has been consistently linked with Upamecano for some time. Bayern’s interest is good news for RB Leipzig as they will get a bidding war for the player.

Bayern is likely to sanction departures of Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez next summer. The German defender has been trying to leave Die Roten for the past two years. Meanwhile, Javi Martinez has been struggling for game time this season, and he has been linked with a move back to Athletic Bilbao on numerous occasions.

These departures may force Die Roten to look for central defenders in summer. Upamecano fits the club’s policy of signing young players, and he already has the experience of playing in the Bundesliga. The French defender will seamlessly slot in Die Roten’s defense.

Next. Why should Bayern Munich avoid signing Douglas Costa?. dark

In my point of view, Bayern should stick with Lukas Mai next season when there are multiple departures. The German defender deserves chances at pro-level, and this is the perfect situation to slowly ease him in the team. Upamecano will surely improve Bayern’s defense, but they currently need to focus on strengthening attack. The fee that could be paid for Upamecano can be utilized to improve the attacking department.
