Top four full-backs to play for Bayern Munich
Willy Sagnol
Lahm’s emergence coincided with the final few seasons of Willy Sagnol at Bayern. The Frenchman returned to the club in 2017/18 as an assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti. That spell will be hardly remembered by Bayern fans, but his playing career at the club will always be cherished.
After a fruitful time in Monaco, Sagnol sealed a move to Die Roten in 1999. The Frenchman took hardly any time to settle and become an important player for Die Roten. Sagnol made 27 appearances during his debut season in the Bundesliga.

The French defender was a solid defender, but his ability to contribute in the final third made helped him to stand out from other full-backs of his era. Sagnol racked up 50 assists in 277 appearances for Die Roten across all competitions, which is an extremely healthy output for a full-back at that time. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)
Sagnol has injury problems during the final few years at the German club. He struggled to play regularly due to the emergence of Lahm and constant injuries. Despite his last few seasons, Sagnol will go down as one of the best full-backs of his generation. He managed to win nine domestic trophies and one European trophy during his time in Bavaria.
