Bixente Lizarazu

Bixente Lizarazu had two spells at Bayern. Both spells were a complete contrast to each other as he was in the twilight of his career during the second spell. Overall, Lizarazu had a phenomenal career at Die Roten when you consider team success and his performances during nine seasons at the club.

The French full-back joined the club from Athletic Bilbao in 1997. Lizarazu played football in Spain for only one season, but his successful time at Bordeaux before Bilbao stint had made him a reliable full-back. The former French international was a marauding left-back that had an immense work ethic.

Lizarazu was efficient with his defending as wingers struggled to get better of him. His presence made Bayern a solid defensive unit. Despite struggling with injuries for few seasons, Lizarazu went on to make 273 appearances for the first team at Bayern. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)

The French defender showed great composure to score the penalty against Valencia in the Champions League final during the 2000/01 season. Lizarazu had a fruitful time in Bavaria as he won 11 domestic trophies and one European trophy. Injuries did halt his career a bit at Bayern, but he still managed to become a vital cog of the team during the successful period at the start of the 21st century.
