Lothar Matthaus has urged Bayern Munich to sign Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspurs next summer.

The number ten position has been a key talking point for Bayern Munich over the past couple of years. Thomas Muller had nailed down this position for much part of this decade. However, Die Roten tried to improve this area by signing James Rodriguez from Real Madrid in 2017.

James joined the club on a two-year loan deal. After a promising debut season, the Colombian struggled in the second season, so Die Roten opted against signing him permanently. Bayern explored the market in this position last summer, and this time signed Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a one-year loan deal.

Coutinho has made a positive start at Bayern, but his arrival has restricted the gametime of Thomas Muller. The German forward is reportedly considering his future at the club if he continues to be on sidelines this season.

Muller’s departure may force Bayern to go back in the market for a number ten. Christian Eriksen has been recently linked with a move to Bavaria. However, Lothar Matthaus believes that the Danish creative midfielder is not the right fit for Die Roten. Speaking to Sport1, Matthaus insisted that Bayern should look at other options instead of signing Eriksen.

"“I have been following the player for a long time and he has disappointed me so far in 2019. A transfer to FC Bayern would not make any sense for me and would be very surprising.”“Eriksen is a fine technician, a typical number 10. But he’s too slow and Niko Kovac likes fast players.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Eriksen will be a transfer target for a host of top European clubs next summer. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder will be out of contract at Spurs in 2020, making him an attractive option for the majority of European clubs. Spurs will ideally like to facilitate his departure in January instead of losing him for nothing in January.

The Danish international has been a vital player for Spurs over the past five seasons. His numbers in Premier League speaks for itself. However, the uncertainty surrounding his future has made a negative impact on his performances. He was vocal about wanting a new adventure in summer, but a transfer never materialized.

Matthaus has advised that Bayern should look to sign Kai Havertz instead of Eriksen. The German midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria over the past 12 months. Die Roten will have to pay a nine-digit figure to acquire his services next season. Moreover, they are set to face fierce competition from other top clubs for his signature.

Eriksen is not as dynamic as Muller, but in terms of creating chances, he is one of the best in Europe. Signing him on a free transfer will be a shrewd move. Havertz will be a more long term signing, but having Eriksen as a backup option is not exactly a bad idea. His arrival on a free transfer will also allow Bayern to invest the majority of funds in signing Leroy Sane next summer.
