It is quite clear that Bayern Munich wants to sign a defensive midfielder this summer. The Bavarian club has been locked in talks with Fulham for Joao Palhinha. The Portuguese midfielder is the top candidate for this position, but Die Roten are far from reaching an agreement with Fulham.

Bayern have two bids rejected for Palhinha. They are planning to make a third and final bid worth €46 million. Meanwhile, Die Roten are also looking at alternatives if a move for Palhinha doesn’t materialize. They have been heavily linked with Everton’s Amadou Onana. Along with the Belgian midfielder, Bayern are also showing interest in a Ligue 1 midfielder.

According to ESPN (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are one of the several clubs showing interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan midfielder is expected to leave the French club this summer. Manchester United are leading the race to sign Ugarte, but there is interest from Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, and Atletico Madrid.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan midfielder is currently involved in the Copa America. He moved to PSG last summer after an impressive spell at Sporting Lisbon. Ugarte started the season well at PSG but lost his place in the starting XI by the end of the campaign. PSG are ready to listen to offers for him as they look to recoup the majority of €60 million they paid for him last summer.

Ugarte is a robust defensive midfielder. Anticipating danger and eradicating them with interceptions and strong tackles are strengths of the Uruguayan midfielder. He is solid in possession, making him a good fit for the defensive midfield position at Bayern.

The move to Paris has not gone as planned for Ugarte. With the prime years of career ahead of him, Ugarte can get back to his best in a different environment. Bayern can provide him with the ideal platform and setup to shine.

Bayern will continue to push for Palhinha before turning their attention to alternatives. The Portuguese midfielder is desperate to complete the transfer after last summer’s failed deadline-day move to Munich. The next few weeks will give more clarity on who will end up being Die Roten’s first-choice defensive midfielder next season.

Elsewhere, Bayern are already negotiating with PSG for another player. The Bavarian club wants to sign Xavi Simons to strengthen the attacking options for next season. They are ready to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy. RB Leipzig are proving to be Die Roten’s strongest competitor for Simons.
