Bayern Munich strengthened their defense last summer by adding an experienced player in Jonathan Tah. The German defender joined Bayern after his contract with Bayer Leverkusen expired at the end of the last season. Tah has formed a solid partnership with Dayot Upamecano this season.
Die Roten solidified their options in defense for the next few seasons by extending the contract of Upamecano. The French defender was set to become a free agent at the end of the current season.
After the contract renewal of Upamecano, Bayern don’t have major plans for the center-back position in the upcoming summer transfer window. However, things could change later in the summer as Bayern are open to listening to offers for two other central defenders.
According to Sky Sports in Germany (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern will not stand in the way if suitable offers come for Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito. They have struggled for regular game time this season as Vincent Kompany has heavily relied on Upamecano and Tah.
Kim Min-jae is currently the third-choice center-back. The South Korean defender is content with life in Munich and ready to fight for game time. He reportedly rejected several offers in the winter transfer window. Bayern remain open to a transfer, but the former Napoli defender is in no hurry to explore a move.
Meanwhile, Hiroki Ito has struggled with injuries since arriving from VfB Stuttgart two years ago. The Japanese defender has made 27 appearances for Die Roten since arriving from Stuttgart, amassing game time of just 1027 minutes. Ito may have to look for a transfer if his game time is set to be limited next season.
Bayern Munich expected to sign new full-backs
Full-back is the position where Bayern are expected to strengthen in the summer. They have already confirmed one departure in this position, as Raphael Guerreiro will leave Munich on a free transfer.
In the right-back position, Bayern are also expecting one permanent departure in the form of Sacha Boey. The French defender left Bayern on loan in January. He is enjoying a good loan spell at Galatasaray. The Turkish club has an option to sign him permanently, but there will be interest from other clubs.
Die Roten have a concrete interest in Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read. It remains to be seen who they will target to strengthen the left-back position, as reports in Germany have suggested Bayern want two full-backs in the summer.
