Bayern Munich had focused on strengthening the attack throughout the summer transfer window. The Bavarian club eventually added more quality in the attack by bringing Luis Diaz and Nicolas Jackson from the Premier League.
From a defensive point of view, Bayern had signed Jonathan Tah at the start of the summer to replace Eric Dier. The English defender sealed a free transfer move to Monaco. Tah has been the first-choice center-back for Vincent Kompany since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer.
The defending Bundesliga champions will look to add more quality in defense next summer. It does look like they have already identified a top target to improve this area of the squad. According to Talksport journalist Alex Crook (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern hold concrete interest in Crystal Palace defender Eric Guehi. The Bavarian club was linked with a move for Guehi during the summer transfer window.
Guehi will be available on a free transfer next summer. The England international has no intention of signing a new contract. Palace had agreed a fee with Liverpool on deadline day, but the transfer fell through as the London-based club couldn’t secure a replacement.
Liverpool remain interested in Guehi next summer. However, Bayern can sign a pre-contract agreement with the defender in January. The Bavarian club needs to convince the defender about the sporting project to get the deal over the line. Considering how well Bayern have done in recent years when it comes to signing top players on free transfers, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if they end up signing Guehi.
The 26-year-old has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the last couple of years. Along with having top level defensive know how, Guehi is also very good on the ball, helping the team to build moves from the back.
Bayern could see a big departure in defense next summer
The record Bundesliga champions were open to listening to offers for Kim Min-jae in the summer. However, the South Korean defender ended up staying in Munich despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Nassr.
The former Napoli defender is not the first-choice center-back for Kompany. He may have to evaluate his future in Munich if he doesn’t get adequate playing time this season.
Bayern also have to sort the future of Dayot Upamecano. The French defender has entered the final year of his contract. Upamecano is eager to extend his contract, but wage demands have been a stumbling block in the negotiations between the two parties.
If Bayern end up losing Upamecano on a free transfer, they will need two defensive signings. As things stand, Die Roten’s interest in Guehi is justified. However, it will be a tricky deal to pull off due to strong interest from Liverpool.
