Dayot Upamecano is currently the talk of the town at Bayern Munich due to his excellent form and contract situation. The French international has been one of the best defenders in Europe over the last 18 months. He has entered the final seven months of his contract at Bayern, alerting several top clubs in Europe.
Upamecano is a crucial player for Die Roten, but he is not the only senior Bayern player to enter the final year of his current deal this season. Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka also face an uncertain future at Die Roten as they will become free agents at the end of the campaign.
Gnabry has been in fine form for Bayern since the start of the season, while Leon Goretzka has been a reliable player for Vincent Kompany in the last 18 months. However, there remain big question marks about them playing in Bavarian colours next season.
Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, has opened up on the situation of both German players. While talking to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Eberl insisted that there is no time frame to decide the future of the German duo. He insisted that preliminary talks have taken place, but there is still work to do to reach a conclusion either way.
"Yes, the future is open, without wanting to specify a timeframe for a decision. We've had initial talks with both players and their agencies. Everything is open, and there's no deadline for either of them"Max Eberl on Gnabry and Goretzka
Eberl also confirmed that both German internationals will have to take a pay cut to sign a new deal. They may also have to sign shorter deals than their previous contracts.
Gnabry is reportedly open to taking a pay cut, and talks with Die Roten have been positive for him. Meanwhile, Die Roten are less certain about extending Goretzka’s contract since Aleksandar Pavlovic and Tom Bischof are able replacements. Meanwhile, the Bavarian club has also been linked with Club Brugge’s Nathan de Cat.
Eberl also hints at a new contract for Konrad Laimer
In his long chat with SportBild, Eberl also insisted that the club can certainly imagine a new contract for Konrad Laimer. The Austrian has excelled in full-back positions under Vincent Kompany. Laimer’s versatility gives a lot of tactical flexibility to Vincent Kompany. The Austrian is also happy to sign a new deal at Bayern.
Eberl is hopeful about extending Upamecano’s contract. He has insisted that Die Roten are yet to make a final contract offer to the French defender, but dialogue remains open between both parties.
With things going well for Bayern on the pitch, the Bavarian faithful will hope that the club chiefs make correct decisions about the futures of key players in the squad.
