Bayern Munich have enjoyed a great run of results over the last 18 months across all competitions. They are alive in all three competitions going into the final two months of the season. Bayern fans largely give credit to Vincent Kompany for the first team’s revival, but the club chiefs have also been astute with their transfer business.

Max Eberl, Director of Sport at Bayern, has been one of the key men behind the club’s good success rate in the transfer market. The Bavarian club missed out on their top targets last season, but their eventual big-money acquisition, Luis Diaz, has been a success this season. Eberl also helped Die Roten to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace in 2024.

Eberl has also played a big role in the contract extensions of Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala in 2025. He also successfully concluded the contract negotiations with Dayot Upamecano earlier this year.

Despite the amount of good work he has done in terms of squad planning, Eberl’s future at Bayern is far from certain. Eberl’s current deal at Bayern expires in 2027. The Bavarian club will make a decision on his future later this year at the annual general meeting.

While talking to TZ’s Absolute Football, Eberl admitted that he is not thinking about his future at Bayern. He is eager to do his job well, and his future will take care of itself.

"It used to make me very nervous. I learned how things work at Bayern. If I do my job well for FC Bayern, the people I frequently discuss and talk to will also make their decisions. Like I said: I'm calm and focused on what's happening on the pitch."

Bayern’s board has given Eberl a challenge of trimming the wage bill in the upcoming transfer window. The Bavarian club saw their wage bill surge after the big bumper contracts for Musiala, Kimmich, Davies, and Upamecano.

Eberl managed to offset the increase in the wage bill by having a smaller squad and supplementing it with the talented young players from the reserves team. Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman left Die Roten, making further space in the wage. Raphael Guerreiro and Leon Goretzka are set to leave the club at the end of the season, which will further reduce the overall wage bill of the first team.

Eberl addresses the futures of Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer

The former Gladbach sporting director also spoke about the futures of Kane and Neuer. Eberl insists that initial talks with Kane went well. He will sit down with Kane’s representatives in the summer to reach an agreement. Eberl remains confident that Kane will sign a new deal and stay in Munich beyond 2027.

Regarding Neuer, Eberl has put the onus on the veteran goalkeeper to make a decision. Eberl believes that Die Roten will offer Neuer a new deal if the experienced goalkeeper feels he can contribute at the top level for one more season. It has been widely reported that Bayern want Neuer to take a pay cut to sign a new deal.
