Bayern Munich Frauen: Three things to watch for in UCL semifinals
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich Frauen has reached the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the second time in club history. After defeating FC Rosengard in the quarterfinals, Chelsea awaits in the semifinals.
The English club will provide perhaps the most difficult test of the season to date for Bayern. It promises to be an exciting matchup between the two clubs and here are three things to watch for ahead of the semifinals.
Defensive or offensive showcase?
Both clubs have conceded just two goals apiece in the Champions League this season. Defensively, they have been very impressive and it’s played a major role in their success. For this reason, it will be interesting to see if this ends up being a low-scoring matchup or if their respective offensive abilities will take center stage and produce goal-filled matches.
While both clubs have proven to be strong defensively, they also have shown to be capable of scoring goals at a high rate. They both currently lead their domestic leagues in goals scored and this semifinal matchup could turn into a high-scoring semifinal. It could really be either one of these two scenarios over the course of the two legs.

Battle of the strikers
Two of the top strikers in Europe this season will feature in this matchup. Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Bayern’s Lea Schuller could very well produce the goal that decides which club advances to the final. Both players have registered impressive goal-scoring numbers during the 2020/21 campaign.
Kerr has scored 18 goals in 20 appearances in the FA Women’s Super League and three goals in five Champions League appearances. Schuller has produced 12 goals in 17 Bundesliga-Frauen appearances and three goals in five Champions League appearances.
With both players entering this match in great form, they will be key players to watch for over the course of the two legs. Kerr has scored an incredible eight goals in her last five appearances for Chelsea while Schuller has scored four goals in her last four appearances for Bayern. Having these two players on the pitch makes this semifinal an ever more exciting matchup.
Bayern Munich Frauen nearing history
If Die Roten defeats Chelsea in the semifinals then they will be set to play in their first-ever Champions League final. It would be a massive accomplishment for the club as they look to write their names in the history books.
After a close 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in the semifinals of the 2018/19 edition of the competition, this season’s squad is looking like a side that is ready to make the jump to an appearance in the final. They’ve been incredible in the Frauen-Bundesliga and that success has translated to success so far in the Champions League as well.
