There are more than four months left for the summer transfer window to open, but Bayern Munich has started laying the groundwork for the primary transfer target. Dayot Upamecano is the priority for Die Roten to bolster their defense in summer. However, they face strong competition from England for the French defender.

According to Bild, Liverpool and Chelsea are strongly interested in signing Upamecano this summer. The good news from this report is that Manchester United is out of the reckoning for the French international. It is going to be a transfer battle between the two English clubs and Bayern Munich.

The hierarchy at Bayern has been vocal about interest in Upamecano in the past few weeks. Die Roten is trying to take the lead in the race for his signature as they have already held a lengthy conversation with the defender’s representatives.

Die Roten is preparing for the departure of David Alaba. The Austrian defender is nailed on to leave Bavaria in the summer on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Jerome Boateng could also be on his way out at Bayern. The German defender also has only five months left on his current deal, but the club is expected to hold talks with him later this season.

More from Bayern Strikes

Liverpool has been one of the best teams in Europe over the last three years, so there is an appeal to join them. However, Chelsea has been struggling to win big titles since the departure of Antonio Conte in 2018. The London club can come up with the best financial package to Upamecano, but the sporting projects at Bayern and Liverpool are more appealing and ready-made to win big trophies.

A move to Die Roten will make sure that Upamecano will not have any adaptation period since he has been playing in the Bundesliga for the last three seasons. He is also going to get a prominent role since both first-choice central defenders of Rekordmeister are most likely leaving in the summer.

Considering the reasonable release clause of Upamecano at RB Leipzig, more big European clubs might join the race for his signature later this season. Die Roten has started the hard work to complete the signing in January itself, so they will be hoping to conclude the deal before the end of the season.

Apart from Upamecano, a left-back is also likely to arrive in Bavaria next summer. Since Lucas Hernandez may get an extended run in the heart of the defense, the German club will need cover for Alphonso Davies. As of now, the German Champions have been linked with Hertha Berlin’s Luca Netz and Reading FC’s Omar Richards for this position.
