Day by day, it is looking certain that Bayern Munich will be spending a big part of their summer transfer budget on defense. Along with the center-back position, left-back is the area that is likely to be bolstered in the transfer market. The latest report in Germany suggests that Die Roten are following a Bundesliga left-back.

According to AZ, Hertha Berlin defender Luca Netz is garnering interest from Bayern Munich. The 17-year-old defender has been enjoying a breakthrough year with Hertha, making six appearances in the Bundesliga until now.

Netz has played in the left-back position for the majority of his youth career. Hertha has also used him in that role, but his good physical frame and aerial prowess can help him to play in the heart of the defense in the future.

The young German defender is likely to come as a deputy for Alphonso Davies next season. He may get involved in the reserves team to maintain rhythm, but train largely with the senior team, as he will act as a cover for Davies.

More from Bayern Strikes

Cover for Davies comes into the picture if Die Roten decides to move Lucas Hernandez in central defense next season. The French international will be replacing the departing David Alaba in this position. Considering the fact that he is the only left-footed center-back in the squad, Hernandez will get the majority of playing time in central defense next season.

Alphonso Davies is firmly the first choice left-back at Bayern. The Canadian winger has been successfully transformed into an explosive full-back, providing the cutting edge at both ends of the pitch. The new left-back should have a similar profile to fit into the team dynamics when Davies is rested or injured.

Apart from Netz, Bayern was heavily linked with Reading’s Omar Richards during the winter transfer window. The 22-year-old championship left-back will be available on a free transfer in the summer. Meanwhile, Netz might command a nominal fee due to his age and experience at the senior level. Netz will be better served by staying at Hertha for his development. However, the chance to join Bayern is too enticing. It will be also intriguing to have a 17-year-old defender covering for an important position in the first team.

Nevertheless, left-back becomes an important position next summer due to limited options in that role. Apart from left-back, Dayot Upamecano looks to be the prime transfer target for Die Roten in defense. The German Champions will be facing competition from Premier League clubs for the French defender.
