Bayern Munich’s up and coming talent Chris Richards is headed to Hoffenheim on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 season. The 20-year-old defender has seen limited opportunities for Bayern’s first team as of late and the loan move should result in Richards receiving more regular appearances in the Bundesliga. With no option to buy clause in the loan, it shows that Bayern’s front office sees Richards as a potential long term player for the club.

Hoffenheim awaits

The move to Hoffenheim makes sense for all parties involved. From Hoffenheim’s perspective, they are a club that is in need of help at center back. They currently have three listed center backs out with injuries and Richards provides instant depth at the position.

Hoffenheim still has to play 15 matches in the Bundesliga season along with the Europa League knockout rounds which begin this month. With this schedule, there should be opportunities ahead for Richards to make regular appearances to help the defensive struggles.

Hoffenheim have conceded the fourth-most goals in the Bundesliga this season and Richards can make an impact if he can help alleviate the high rate of goals they have been conceding. According to Football Reference, Hoffenheim has used a 3-5-2 formation in their last five matches. However, they have played four in the back as well in previous matches.

With Richards having played in the right-back role in previous appearances for Bayern, the American defender could be utilized in this position as well. Overall, this is going to be an interesting loan spell to keep an eye on as Richards continues to develop.

Richards looks to impress

In terms of Richards’ career, he will get the opportunity to make regular appearances in the Bundesliga on a consistent basis. This is something he has yet to experience in his career as he has spent the majority of his time playing for Bayern’s second team. Richards will have the chance to impress the Bayern coaching staff as he will be able to show what he can do in the Bundesliga on a regular basis.

If all goes well at Hoffenheim during this loan spell, then Richards should return to Bayern in the summer-ready to compete for a regular spot in the first team.

Bayern is likely going to be losing players after this season for various reasons and this will open the door for Richards to come in and fight for a first-team spot. At just 20, he still has plenty of development ahead of him and he could very well be a key player for Die Roten in the future.

He is certainly one of the top prospects for the U.S. National Team.
