Bayern Munich should quickly secure the future of Jerome Boateng
Jerome Boateng was one of the best players on the pitch for Bayern Munich against Hoffenheim on Saturday. The former German international defended resolutely and also managed to get himself on the scoresheet through a towering header. Boateng continues to silence critics with his consistent performances.
The veteran defender showed his immense mental strength to rediscover his good form at Bayern under Hansi Flick. The German manager decided to stick with him for the majority of games in the last 18 months. The hard work of Flick and Boateng should be quickly rewarded by the club by agreeing to a short-term deal with the defender.
Boateng is also going to become a free agent in the summer. He was free to negotiate with interested clubs during the winter transfer window, but the senior player remains keen on extending his eight-year-long stay at the club.
According to Sport1, Bayern will be holding talks with Boateng’s entourage by March. The club might approach these negotiations like the way they did in the case of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. No big contracts for players above 30.

Considering Boateng is first choice center-back for Flick, squashing the speculation by extending his deal by a year quickly will help the team massively in the second half of the season. There is no constant chatter surrounding Boateng’s future, as in the case of David Alaba, but rewarding the German defender will further boost his confidence for the rest of the campaign.
Moreover, a short-term deal will mean that Boateng will be able to be part of the squad when the defense is going through the transition next season. He is unlikely to play regularly next season, but his experience will be vital both on and off the pitch.
Boateng has been a great player for Bayern ever since joining from Manchester City at the start of last decade. His time in Bavaria seems to be over two years ago when he was agitating for a move away to Paris Saint-Germain, and his performances on the pitch also sharply declined. Flick’s arrival has flipped the situation on its head, helping Boateng to become one of the consistent players in the current squad.
The German Champions are still fighting for three trophies this season. Boateng is going to be an influential figure for Flick at the club, so Die Roten should look to extend his contract soon rather than complicating the situation by waiting until the end of the season.
