Bayern Munich was never expected to be active in the winter transfer window. The only outgoings were expected to be loan departures. Fresh doubts were raised over the summer window when Bayern officials kept on insisting that big money moves are unlikely to happen due to the severe impact on the finances of the club.

Despite those comments, the latest update from Germany suggests that Die Roten will be getting one of the most talented central defenders in Europe. According to SportBild’s Christian Falk, Rummenigge has confirmed the club’s interest in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

The German Champions have been heavily linked with Upamecano for a long time. Negotiating with RB Leipzig is not a concern at all as the French defender has a feasible release clause worth €42 million in his contract. Convincing Upamecano will be the hurdle for Die Roten as numerous top clubs are interested in signing him.

Upamecano has been one of the most consistent center-backs in the Bundesliga during the last seasons. He was also impressive in the Champions League for RB Leipzig last season when the club reached the semi-final of the competition.

More from Bayern Strikes

The French international is a complete modern central defender. He is very good on the ball and has the incredible pace to make recovery tackles. Upamecano is also consistent at winning duels against formidable attacking players. He has lapses of concentration, but that issue can be ironed out by coaches on the training ground.

Considering the inflation of transfer fees of central defenders in the past five seasons, Upamecano can turn out to be a bargain for that fee. Moreover, he will need very little time for adaptation as he has been playing in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig.

Bayern will be parting ways with David Alaba in the summer as he is reportedly negotiating with Real Madrid to sign a pre-contract agreement. The future of Jerome Boateng also looks uncertain, so a center-back will be a priority for Die Roten next summer. After signing Upaemcano, Bayern’s overhaul of the backline that started in 2019 will be complete.

The German Champions will be hoping that the French contingent at the club will help in convincing Upamecano to choose Bayern over other clubs. Moreover, Bayern also satisfies his sporting ambitions as they consistently compete for big titles every season. This transfer can turn out to be a straightforward deal for Die Roten if they convince the player.
