Bayern Munich should look to seal deal for Dayot Upamecano in January
Bayern Munich should press ahead with plans to sign Dayot Upamecano in January.
The final game of the Hinrunde is set to take place later today. Bayern Munich will be on the road against Bayer Leverkusen. After this weekend, the Bundesliga clubs can have a short break and regroup before returning to action in January.
Along with working on a few weaknesses in the team, Die Roten should also have an eye on the winter transfer window. It is a difficult period to make good transfers. Most of the deals done during this window can be due to panic. However, well-run clubs such as Bayern think long term, and there is always a chance to get good deals in January.
Earlier this year, Die Roten sealed a deal for Alexander Nubel in the winter window. The German goalkeeper signed a pre-contract agreement with the German Champions. Die Roten should look to do a similar deal in January, and the player this time around should be Dayot Upamecano.
The French defender will not be available for free transfer like Nubel. However, the German Champions should try to get it sorted with the French defender since he has a much more realistic release clause in summer.

Apart from his release clause, it is a position that Die Roten will need reinforcement next summer. Jerome Boateng could leave next summer when his contract expires, while David Alaba already has one foot out of the door after the club withdrew new contract offers. Nianzou Kouassi is yet to hit the ground running this season due to injuries, so his workload will have to be managed over the next year or so. All these circumstances scream for a new center-back pairing.
The German Champions shouldn’t agree to a fee with RB Leipzig in January, but they should try to reach a verbal agreement with the player. Upamecano has impressed in Europe and Bundesliga in the last 18 months, so many clubs will be in the running to sign him.
As of now, things are looking promising for Bayern if they want to sign Upamecano. According to The Atheltic, Manchester United has cooled their interest in the French defender, and Bayern is in a pole position to sign him. Before other clubs come into the picture, Die Roten should look to convince the player and sort the personal terms.
Upamecano is only 22, but has shown a lot of maturity in his performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League. He will be a long-term signing. His arrival will make sure that Bayern will have a strong group of defenders to achieve success in the present and future.
