Bayern Munich should start focusing on the contract talks with Niklas Sule.

The defensive department at Bayern Munich is going to be under the spotlight for a few months as a couple of senior stars are likely to leave next summer. David Alaba and Jerome Boateng will be available on free transfers next year. In such a scenario, losing another central defender could be catastrophic despite the strength of the squad.

Niklas Sule is in the final two years of his contract at Bayern. By the time the summer window opens, he will have only one year left on the current deal. Die Roten will find themselves in a tricky position if the recent rumours regarding Sule are to be believed.

According to SportBild’s Christian Falk, Sule dreams about playing for Manchester United in the future. The German defender has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past, but there have been no reports suggesting that two clubs held talks regarding a transfer.

By next summer, Sule will be in very much control of his future. In case Die Roten doesn’t manage to extend his deal before the next summer window, then they may have to sell him for a lesser fee or risk losing him for nothing in 2022.

More from Bayern Strikes

Sule has been a mainstay in the starting XI at Bayern ever since moving to Bavaria from Hoffenheim in 2017. In the first season, he was rotated in central defense. After impressing in the debut campaign, Sule established himself as the first-choice central defender for Die Roten.

The German international wanted to become a leader at the back after Mats Hummels left for Borussia Dortmund in 2019. However, a serious knee injury in October 2019 kept Sule out of action for more than ten months. Due to a truncated season due to the pandemic, Sule managed to feature in the knockout stages of the Champions League. He came on for Boateng in the first half against Paris-Saint Germain and delivered a solid performance.

Flick has been using Sule consistently this season. He has been playing regularly with Alaba in the heart of the defense. The injury has affected him a bit, but it is just a matter of time before he starts delivering stellar performances like he used to do before the knee injury.

Sule is yet to enter the peak of his career, so losing him would be a big blow for Die Roten. The recent reports in Germany will give Bayern fans some relief as the club is looking to reward the German spine of the squad that includes Sule. Since Manchester United is expected to be in the market for a central defender in the summer, it is essential that Sule’s contract is extended sooner rather than later.
