Bayern Munich Frauen defeated Wolfsburg to go five points clear at the top of the table.

The incredible start to the 2020/21 season has continued for Bayern Munich Frauen. On Sunday, they defeated the reigning Frauen Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg, 4-1, to take a five-point lead at the top of the table. Incredibly, the lone goal Wolfsburg scored is the only goal Bayern have allowed so far in the Bundesliga.

Bayern took a 2-0 lead before halftime as Viviane Asseyi and Marina Hegering scored for the home side. Lineth Beerensteyn extended Bayern’s advantage shortly after the second-half kickoff in the 46th minute. A successful penalty conversion from Lena Goeßling brought Wolfsburg back within one goal but an own goal by the visitors in the 78th minute made it 4-1.

Dominate Bayern

The sensational form Bayern has shown in the Frauen Bundesliga has put them in the driver’s seat of claiming the title. Wolfsburg dominated the league last season but the tables have turned in favor of Bayern this time around. For this reason, Bayern’s victory on Sunday was a massive result as they were able to soundly defeat the club who should be their closest rivals in the title race.

One of the main reasons for Bayern’s success has been the play of the backline as they have been nothing short of fantastic so far with just one goal conceded in the league. This has allowed goalkeeper Laura Benkarth to record an impressive eight clean sheets to lead the league. Benkarth made multiple key saves against Wolfsburg which helped cement her place as the top goalkeeper in the Bundesliga.

More from Bayern Strikes

Goals from many sources

A total of 12 players have scored for Bayern so far in the Bundesliga season. It’s been a complete team effort when it comes to goal scoring. The majority of these goals have come from non-penalty kicks as well. Just one penalty kick has been attempted by Bayern according to Football Reference.

With the majority of the goals coming from open play or non-penalty set pieces, it’s an encouraging sign that the trend of different goal scorers should continue.

The leading goal scorers for Bayern are currently Asseyi and Sydney Lohmann. Signing Asseyi during the summer transfer window is proving to be a great move by the club as she has registered five goals in nine appearances. Lohmann continues to be a rising star for Bayern as her six goals lead the club and she has already registered a career-high in goals scored in a single season.

Can anyone stop them?

After the dominance Bayern has shown, it’s difficult to see any club defeating them in the near future. Bayer Leverkusen awaits in their next Bundesliga match and then the fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt will mark the halfway point of the campaign. If they can reach the halfway mark of the season undefeated it should give Bayern confidence they can continue to dominate the league.
