Leon Goretzka opens up about Leroy Sane as new reports suggest that the latter’s move to Bayern Munich could happen in summer.

Bayern Munich seems to have stepped up their pursuit of Leroy Sane. The defending Bundesliga champions have reportedly agreed to a contract with the German winger. Die Roten now needs to start negotiations with Manchester City to conclude the deal when the summer transfer window opens.

The Athletic UK (subscription needed) reported last week that Rekordmeister is confident that Sane is committed to completing this move.  This report insisted that Sane’s family is eager to move back to Germany, so City currently has very little chance of convincing him to stay in Manchester.

Die Roten will be looking to leverage Sane’s contractual situation at City to sign him for a lesser fee this year. The German club would have paid over the odds last summer. Sane only has one year left on his contract, so Rekordmeister can end up signing him for a bargain price.

Sane will be a big signing for the club, adding the stardust to the attack. Leon Goretzka was excited about playing with him last season. Speaking to Welt am Sonntag (via Sportbuzzer), the German midfielder once again expressed his wish to play with the winger. Goretzka also insisted that Sane has the right mentality to win trophies.

"“It’s no secret that I like to play with Leroy. We get along very well. Our friendship did not come from football alone, I have known Leroy since 5th grade. We have a different level of friendship than if we only knew each other through football”“In Leroy’s head, he wants first and foremost to play football successfully and win titles. What many forget is that he is no longer the boy he was when he was 19. In some things he is even ahead of me: he has become a father and dared to go abroad. He has matured.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Goretzka and Sane came through the youth academy at FC Schalke. The German duo has also played for the national team together at different age groups. Goretzka played a bit longer at Schalke before signing for Die Roten on a free transfer in 2018. Sane chose to take a big step in 2016 to play under Pep Guardiola at Man City.

Acquiring Sane from City will make sure that Die Roten have a strong group of players in wide positions. Sane’s productivity in the final third has improved under Guardiola, so Die Roten will be getting a player who will contribute with goals and assists. Serge Gnabry has stepped up this season, but Rekordmeister still needs one more winger with consistent productivity in the final third.

Sane is likely to be the only winger the German club will sign this summer. The club hierarchy is reportedly eager to take up the option to sign Ivan Perisic permanently from Inter Milan. Perisic joined the club on a one-year loan deal last summer.

Perisic and Sane will be good additions to the squad, providing the right mix of flair and experience. Goretzka has lately linked up well with Sane at the National team. The German midfielder has now to play the waiting game to play with Sane at the club level as the move looks to be inevitable.
