First game as Left-back

While going forward, Davies was expected to be a winger for Die Roten. The Canadian winger had been a goal-scoring wide forward for Vancouver Whitecaps. He did play as left-back in few games for Canada, but he was always regarded as a left-winger. Lothar Matthaus backed him to become an important attacking player for Bayern in the future.

It was a slightly disappointing start to the 2019/20 season for Davies. He was yet to get a start in the Bundesliga till September. After an injury crisis in the defense, Niko Kovac turned to Davies to fill in the left-back position against Union Berlin at the end of October.

The move to play Davies as left-back turned out to be a masterstroke from Kovac as Davies adapted quickly to this role, and delivered respectable performances in the initial games as a defender. Hansi Flick continued to play Davies as left-back while David Alaba was deployed in the heart of the defense.

With every passing game, Davies showed a great amount of improvement. He was solid defensively and a nightmare for defenders while going forward. The game against Union Berlin will go down as the turning point for Davies’ career in Bavaria. He was able to establish himself as a key member of starting XI much earlier than expected due to the change of role in the game against Union Berlin.
