Bayern Munich is confident about Lucas Hernandez to do well after a difficult debut season.

A debut season for a player in different league and country can be challenging. Injuries can become a big hurdle for a player while adapting to a new club and playing style. Lucas Hernandez has somewhat experienced a similar start to his time at Bayern Munich.

The French defender moved to Bavaria from Atletico Madrid for a club-record fee last summer. Hernandez arrived at the club with a serious knee injury that effectively ended his season at Atletico Madrid in March. Die Roten quickly reached an agreement with the Spanish club and announced his arrival at the end of March.

Hernandez took more than three months to completely recover from the knee injury. He missed the entire pre-season tour to complete his recovery. The French international was declared fit for the first competitive game of the season.

Throughout the season, Hernandez has struggled with minor injuries. He also suffered a major injury in November that ruled him out for two months. The club remains confident that Hernandez will soon deliver his best performances. Speaking to SportBild (via GGFN), Hasan Salihamidzic is backing Hernandez to come stronger from the injury nightmare.

"“It is unfortunate that he didn’t get off to a good start with us due to injury, but these things happen.”“Lucas has the quality and he will come out of such a situation stronger. His transfer was unanimously approved by the board of directors and supervisory board and we are convinced that he will be of great help to our team.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Hernandez has been one of the best defenders of his age group in Europe. The Frenchman was one of the key men in defense for Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid. He was also a mainstay in the French team that won the World Cup in 2018.

There is no doubt about Hernandez’s talent. He has looked comfortable in the game he managed to play this year. The Frenchman goes for the kill while contesting duels, and also shows a great deal of composure while bringing the ball from the back. Hernandez still has the best years of his career ahead of him, so Die Roten should not be worried after a frustrating debut season.

Rekordmeister has been unfortunate with defensive injuries this season. Apart from Hernandez, Niklas Sule has also spent most of this season on sidelines. The German defender suffered a serious knee injury in October. He is currently on the mend and should be ready to play when competitive football resumes.

Sule and Hernandez are the future of Die Roten’s defense. The club may try to improve their defensive department by signing a right-back this summer. This will make sure that Benjamin Pavard also remains an option in central defense. Die Roten will hope that next season all defender remain fit, helping them to challenge on all fronts.
