Dietmar Hamann advises Bayern Munich to not offer a long deal to Manuel Neuer.
Bayern Munich has been trying to sort the contracts of senior players and manager. Hansi Flick was appointed as the new permanent manager of first-team. He was handed a two-year deal. The German club also quickly wrapped up the contract extension of Thomas Muller.
The reports in Germany suggest that Thiago Alcantara is next in line to sign a new contract with Die Roten. The Spanish midfielder has won back a place back in Hansi Flick’s starting XI by delivering consistent performances after the winter break.
Manuel Neuer is another player that Rekordmeister is eager to hand a new deal. The German reports had insisted that the two parties are yet to reach an agreement since the 34-year-old goalkeeper wants a longer deal than the one offered by the club.
Dietmar Hamann had warned Die Roten about handing a long term deal for Neuer. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamann admitted that goalkeepers could play longer, but a long deal for Neuer can turn out to be counter-productive for the defending Bundesliga champions.
"“Neuer is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best, and now the club has to see if they want to do that. I would also be careful to extend by four years now, even if a goalkeeper can play longer.”“I would not extend four years, but Bayern have put themselves in this position.”"

Alexander Nubel‘s signing in January has complicated the situation surrounding Neuer in Bavaria. At the start of the campaign, there were positive reports in Germany suggesting that Neuer was inching closer to signing a new deal. However, Nubel’s arrival has raised doubts over Neuer’s future at the club.
Hamann has made a valid point regarding Neuer’s situation. The German international is still a top player, but committing for such a long deal doesn’t make sense. The club has offered short term deals for every player above 30 in the past few seasons, so breaking this trend may set a bad precedent.
A two-year extension for Neuer will benefit all parties, including Nubel. Even if Die Roten fails to agree on a contract extension with Neuer, they should keep him till next summer. Nubel will be in a good position to become number one for Rekordmeister by the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Apart from Neuer, Die Roten is yet to reach an agreement with David Alaba for a new contract. The Austrian full-back is reportedly unsure about his future at the club. Meanwhile, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez also have one year left of their current contracts, but they are likely to leave the club in summer.
