Marcell Jansen

Bayern decided to bolster their defensive options at the start of the 2007/08 season. The club wanted to improve options in the full-back position. They addressed the situation by signing Marcell Jansen from Borussia Monchengladbach as he excelled for club and country at that time. Die Roten paid a fee close to €10 million to sign Jansen. The debut campaign for Jansen was perfectly fine as he made 33 appearances across all competitions, creating four goals in the process. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt) However, his stay in Munich turned out to short as Hamburg signed him at the end of the 2007/08 campaign.

More from Bayern Strikes

The former German international was in and out of the side, so eventually, it was best for all parties to part ways. Jansen spent his rest of the career at Hamburg and retired from the game in 2015. The former German full-back is currently serving as president of Hamburg.

Considering the amount of fee paid for Jansen and the initial promise he showed, Jansen turned out to be one of the most disappointing transfer deals for Die Roten. He eventually had a decent overall career, but his experience in Bavaria was one to forget.
