Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic spoke on various transfer related issues during a press conference in Doha.

The winter transfer window is always a difficult time to do business. Bayern Munich has numerous areas to address before at the start of this month. The need of additions has become even more evident after an injury to Serge Gnabry during the training camp in Doha.

Bayern hardly does business in January and often start laying the groundwork for summer transfer plans during this month. They have done the same in 2020 as they announced the arrival of Alexander Nubel at the start of this month. Nubel will join on a free transfer from Schalke in June.

Apart from Nubel, Die Roten need more signings this month. Hansi Flick also insisted that Bayern need to strengthen the squad this month. The German manager wants reinforcements in defense and attack in this window.

Flick’s public request for signings bemused Hasan Salihamidzic. Speaking to media (via SportBild), Salihamidzic insisted that he would prefer discussions regarding transfer to be private. He also ruled out a winter transfer for Leroy Sane and insisted that the club is looking at other options in the market.

"“I was surprised yesterday by this media activity of Hansi’s squad planning. You have to understand that. I was surprised.”“We are examining the options that are known to be difficult to find in this transfer period. It is difficult to strengthen our team. The top players will not be released by the clubs during this transfer period. We check everything.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Salihamidzic stressed on the fact that Bayern needs players in this window that can straightaway help the squad. This comment surely explains Die Roten’s interest in signing Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha. The German Champions have reportedly had a loan bid rejected for the Ivory Coast winger.

Apart from a forward, Bayern has been heavily linked with a move for Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese right-back has been struggling to get regular playing time at Manchester City since joining the club in summer. The English club and Cancelo are reportedly open to transfer midway through the season.

Die Roten are focussing on building a squad for the present and future, so it is necessary to approach young players with the potential to become world-class players. It is difficult to get such players at the halfway stage of the season. Moreover, the selling clubs often demand a much more hefty transfer fee for players in the winter market.

Bayern have not been exactly lucky with loan deals in the past. The club should not make panic buys and look for long term solutions rather than focusing on short term gains. It will be interesting to see if Flick’s comments will force Bayern’s hand in the next three weeks.
