Bayern Munich has reportedly made no contact with Manchester City to sign Joao Cancelo.

There are five days left for the transfer window to reopen across Europe. The top European clubs rarely do business in January, as big deals are difficult to execute midway through this season. Bayern Munich is also expecting a quiet January window.

Despite Die Roten’s stance, there have been reports in Germany suggesting that the club will be looking to sign a defender in the winter market. The specific position that has been mentioned in these reports is right-back.

Joao Cancelo is one of the two right-backs Bayern is reportedly interested in signing next month. The Portuguese full-back moved to Manchester City from Juventus in summer, but he is currently struggling to get regular playing time under Pep Guardiola.

The latest update from Germany on Cancelo to Bayern may pour cold water on this transfer. According to Sky Sports,  Die Roten is yet to discuss with Man City about Cancelo. They do suggest that the player and English club will be open to a loan move or transfer due to his struggles in England.

More from Bayern Strikes

Cancelo has been widely regarded as one of the promising full-backs in Europe. He excelled in Italy during his loan spell at Inter Milan. His performances in Serie A eventually helped him to seal a move to Juventus from Valencia. The Portuguese full-back went on to make 34 appearances in his first season at Juventus.

Despite his promising performances, the Italian champions decided to trade him for Manchester City’s Danilo. Since moving to England, the Portugal international has made only five appearances across all competitions. His best work comes in the final third due to his great deliveries and passes in the box. Cancelo also pops up a few goals throughout the campaign, which is a very handy contribution from a full-back.

Cancelo improved the defensive side of his game during his time in Italy. However, there are still moments where he tends to switch off and leave gaps behind him when he motors into the final third. He is decent in one vs one situation, so he just needs to improve game awareness to become a top right-back.

The Portuguese made a wrong decision in summer due to the quality of full-backs Man City already had the disposal. A move to Bayern may prove to beneficial for him because he will get a lot of game time in Bavaria. The German club needs Benjamin Pavard in central defense and Joshua Kimmich in midfield, so there is a void in the right-back position. A loan deal may benefit all the parties, so this transfer could be the one to keep an eye on in January.
