Niko Kovac is living on borrowed time at Bayern Munich
Niko Kovac‘s position at Bayern Munich is set to be under review after the next two games.
Bayern Munich endured a torrid weekend as they slipped to their heaviest Bundesliga defeat of this decade. The defending champions shipped in five goals against Eintracht Frankfurt at Commerzbank-Arena on Saturday.
Niko Kovac’s future has been the talking point in the German media over the past few weeks. Multiple German outlets have already linked various top managers to Bavaria in the past couple of weeks. This defeat will further increase pressure on the Croatian manager.
According to SportBild, Kovac is living on borrowed time at Bayern Munich. This report suggests that the next two games will play a crucial role in deciding Kovac’s fate in Bavaria. Bayern chiefs decided to review his position after the games against Olympiakos and Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern started the October month with an emphatic 7-2 win over Tottenham Hotspurs. Since the win against the North London club, Rekordmeister has thrice dropped points in the Bundesliga. Even the wins during this run were not convincing as Die Roten narrowly edged past their opponents.

The Bavarians slipped to the fourth position in Bundesliga due to these poor results. However, the results in Cup competitions have been fine for Bayern. They are currently in the third round of the DFB Pokal and sit firmly at the top of their group table in the Champions League. Before Saturday’s game against Frankfurt, Uli Hoeness admitted that the talk of a crisis has been overblown.
Die Roten has been doing well in the final third, but the defense has been all over the place. They don’t concede many chances over the course of 90 minutes, but there is at least a couple of individual defensive errors every game. The injuries to Niklas Sule and Lucas Hernandez have not helped Kovac’s cause as he is not able to stick with a fixed backline for a run of few games.
Kovac was under similar pressure last season when results and performances were turgid. However, Bayern ended the season on a strong note by winning the domestic double. These two trophies secured Kovac’s immediate future at the club.
Bayern smashed six goals past Borussia Dortmund at Allianz in March. Kovac will need a similar type of performance next weekend to save his job. Before that, the Croatian needs to make sure that Die Roten clinch a comfortable victory against Olympiakos at Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
