Former Germany midfielder Michael Ballack has tipped Timo Werner to make a big move to Bayern Munich next summer.

Bayern Munich tried to improve the attacking department of the squad in the summer transfer window. The German champions failed to land their prime transfer target but managed to improve the attack by signing Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho.

Numerous forwards were linked with Bayern throughout the past year. Timo Werner was one of these forwards. The German striker was determined to join Bayern as he refused to extend his contract at RB Leipzig.

However, Die Roten didn’t make a concrete offer to RB Leipzig despite reports claiming that they already had agreed to personal terms with the German striker. Werner was reportedly frustrated with lack of contact from Bayern in summer. The Bundesliga champions instead focused on signing his compatriot- Leroy Sane from Manchester City.

Werner eventually agreed to a contract extension at Leipzig to avoid speculation this summer. However, Michael Ballack still believes that Werner could join Die Roten next summer. Speaking to TZ, the German midfielder said that despite signing new deal Werner is likely to be a Bayern player next summer.

"“He has expressed his gratitude to Leipzig with his contract extension.”“But I think it could be hot again next year with a change to Bayern.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern were reportedly ready to wait till next summer to sign Werner on a free transfer. There were reports in Germany suggesting that club chiefs were also not completely convinced that Werner had the quality to play for Bayern.

Werner could have been a top addition for the German champions this summer. The German can play as a number nine and on the left side of the attack. He could eventually become the long term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker is confident that he can contribute at the top level for at least four years, though. However, Werner could have helped in managing Lewandowski’s workload in the next few seasons.

The German striker was reportedly not interested in a move away to foreign clubs last summer. Bayern is likely to revive their interest in Leroy Sane next summer. If Philippe Coutinho manages to fire for the Bundesliga champions this season and Sane joins next year, then a move for Werner will be unlikely.

Werner has been sensational for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga this season. The German striker is the second top scorer in the league with five goals. If he continues to maintain this form this season, then Die Roten chiefs might change their opinion on the player. However, the Bavarians will have to pay a much bigger fee for him due to his contract extension.
