Report: Timo Werner was frustrated by lack of contact from Bayern Munich
Timo Werner was reportedly annoyed by lack of communication from Bayern Munich this summer.
Bayern Munich has undergone a squad overhaul this summer. The German champions were not aggressive in the market throughout this transfer window but eventually bolstered the squad by making a flurry of signings in the last couple of weeks.
The attacking department at Bayern needed reinforcements this summer due to departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. The German club chased Manchester City winger Leroy Sane all summer only for the 23-year-old forward to suffer a serious injury last month.
After Sane’s injury, Bayern swiftly completed deals for Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic from Barcelona and Inter Milan respectively. The Bundesliga champions were also expected to sign Timo Werner this summer, but this transfer never came close to completion in the last three months.
According to Sky Sports, Werner was eager to join Bayern this summer, but the club didn’t contact RB Leipzig or him to complete this deal. The German striker had agreed to a contract with Die Roten earlier this year, but there was no contact between the two parties during summer.

This report also insisted that Werner wanted to leave Leipzig only for Bayern. He rejected offers from numerous European clubs and initially rejected contract renewal offers from Leipzig. After Die Roten didn’t come up with an offer for Werner, he decided to extend his contract with Leipzig. His current contract will expire in 2023. Kicker believes that there is a release clause worth €30 million in Werner’s new deal.
Werner had been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria in the past couple of seasons. The German striker is widely tipped to be an ideal long term replacement for Lewandowski. Moreover, his ability to play on left-flank made him a perfect addition for Die Roten’s attack.
Apart from a backup striker, the Bavarians have all the bases covered in their squad. Robert Lewandowski has urged the club to sign a backup striker to manage his workload this season. Werner would have been an ideal backup for Lewandowski, but Bayern was looking for wingers instead of versatile forwards this summer.
It will be interesting to see if Die Roten revives interest in Werner next summer. Werner’s arrival will depend on the performances of Countinho and Perisic this season. If the duo fails to impress in Bayern colors this season, then they might return to their respective clubs. In such a scenario of their departures, signing Werner will be no brainer for Bayern.
