Lothar Matthaus believes that Alphonso Davies has all the qualities to become an important player for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich is set to start their Bundesliga campaign without some of their veteran players. The German club is entering a transition period as they decided to overhaul the squad by releasing older players this summer.

After the departure of players such as Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, the onus will be on young forwards to step up and find a good level of consistency in their performances. Alphonso Davies is one of these young wingers that will have huge responsibility this season.

Lothar Matthaus has backed the Canadian winger to become an important player for Die Roten. Speaking to Prosoccer USA, Matthaus admitted that Davies needs to be patient with his development. The former German defender believes that Davies has all the attributes to become a key player for Bayern.

"“He has to learn. Coming from MLS to one of the biggest clubs in the world is a big step, but Bayern Munich really believes in him.”“I believe he can be a future player for Bayern for sure, he just needs to wait a bit. He is in a group of 15 to 16 players at the moment.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

There have been numerous reports in Germany suggesting that Die Roten might use Davies in the left-back position this season. Niko Kovac used Davies in this position during the pre-season games. However, Matthaus is adamant that Davies is at his best when he is deployed as a winger.

Davies struggled to regular gametime at Bayern last season. He joined the club in January and managed to make seven appearances across all competitions. The Canadian winger managed to score his first competitive goal in these appearances. Davies used to play for the reserves team when he was not in the squad for the Bundesliga games.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps winger is likely to get more opportunities this season. Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are currently the first choice winger under Kovac. Bayern is still working on the deal to bring Leroy Sane from Manchester City. Davies is not worried about Die Roten’s attempts to sign new wingers as he is ready to fight for his place in the starting eleven.

Bayern Munich meanwhile received positive news on the injury front. Lucas Hernandez has started training with the squad at Tegernsee training camp. The Frenchman is close to complete fitness and is likely to make his debut against Hertha Berlin on August 17. Die Roten is set to begin their DFB Pokal campaign next week against Energie Corbus.
