Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes Manchester City winger Leroy Sane is the ideal signing for the German giants this summer.

The 2018-19 season came to a fantastic end for Bayern Munich as they completed the domesti double with an emphatic win over RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final on Saturday. This achievement has also made sure that Niko Kovac will be the club’s manager next season despite the heavy criticism he’s received throughout the season.

Bayern will now turn their focus to next season and resume with their work in the transfer market. The Bundesliga champions have released numerous veteran players, and there are some serious question marks over the future of some of the fringe players like Jerome Boateng. This could be a defining transfer window for Die Roten, as they start preparing another world class side that can compete on all fronts.

Leroy Sane is one of the top transfer targets for Bayern this summer. The club chiefs have publicly declared interest in signing the Manchester City winger. In his weekly column for Sky Deutschland, Lothar Matthaus has backed Sane to be a fantastic signing for the Bavarians. The most-capped player in Germany’s history believes Sane is the ideal player to improve Bayern’s chances in Europe.

"“A player who, in my eyes, will enchant the Bayern fans next year is Leroy Sane. If Uli Hoeneß publicly reveals that it makes an effort for the player, this lands in the vast majority of cases in Bavaria.“And it would be a fantastic transfer, as Sane is one of the best wingers out there. Tricky, dangerous in front of goal, fast, usable on both wings and provided with a great future.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Matthaus also added that a transfer from City to Bayern would be the ideal scenario for all the parties involved due to Sane’s game time issues under Pep Guardiola. Bayern have reportedly lodged a first bid in the region of €80 million for the German winger, but other sources claim there have been no official bids. Despite Uli Hoeness’ recent claim that he doesn’t see his club breaking the €80 million mark on a single transfer, Matthaus thinks Bayern will have to break their transfer record yet again to sign Sane.

Leroy Sane has been a crucial player for Man City in the past two seasons. He has found a very good level of consistency under Guardiola. His numbers have improved, too; he ended each of his last two campaigns in England with double digits for both goals and assists. Bayern have always focused on signing top German talents, and in Sane they get one of the best young wingers, not only in Germany, but in all of Europe.

Bayern Munich will have a fantastic set of wide players if they manage to bring in the 23-year-old over the summer. Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry have formed a very good partnership in the past few months, and Alphonso Davies is still very raw but has the potential to become a key player in the future. These four players can potentially be the face of Bayern’s attack for the next decade.

The next few weeks will definitely give a good idea if Bayern have a chance of completing a move for Sane. Man City are reportedly looking at Benfica’s Joao Felix as a replacement of German winger. The Premier League giants will most likely want to secure a replacement before signing off on this deal. Bayern are known for wrapping up big deals quickly, but I expect their pursuit of Sane to take longer than usual.
