Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has urged Bayern Munich to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window.
The winter transfer window opens in just one month, so the rumors are coming thick and fast. Bayern Munich will no doubt be very active in the next summer transfer window, but they could also pounce on a few opportunities this winter, too. Young attacking talent will be the main target for the club over the next few windows.
Bayern has been the most powerful club in the Bundesliga for the majority of the past decade, and they have been able to cherry pick the league’s top talents on many occasions. Lothar Matthaus has urged Bayern to go this route once more and sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
In his column for Sky Sport, Matthaus insisted that Werner has all the traits to be a successful player in Bavaria.
"“Bayern always wants to have the best German national team in their ranks and Timo Werner is clearly one of them.“If Bayern manage to sign him, the deal will go beyond all limits of any Bundesliga transfer. The transfer will be in the very high double-digit million range, and the whole package will certainly be even bigger.”"

Matthaus is not the first person to advise Bayern to sign Werner. Jupp Heynckes also admitted last season that Bayern need to sign Werner in the future, even admitting they should have already moved for him. Uli Hoeness has admitted on numerous occasions that his club wants to nurture young talent instead of buying superstars for a lot of money. Werner fits this profile perfectly. He is one of the faces of the next generation of German players, and he has the potential to become one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.
Werner’s contract at RB Leipzig is set to expire in 2020. The Red Bulls might sell him next summer if the forward doesn’t sign a new deal. Werner has been primarily a prolific goal-scorer in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig. He has shown his versatility, however, for the national team, as Joachim Low has used him as a winger on a few occasions.
RB Leipzig has used Werner in the number nine role in the past two seasons, but he is more than capable of playing out wide. Bayern Munich need prolific wingers right now in order to replace the departing Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. It would be a very bold move from Bayern if they consider Werner as the replacement for one of these veteran wingers. Robert Lewandowski is not showing any signs of decline right now and is still expected to deliver at the top level for at least two more years, so center-forward is not the club’s primary focus.
Lewandowski pushed to get a move to Real Madrid this past summer. However, the Spanish giants did not make any concrete attempt to sign him, while the Bavarians had no intention to sell their talismanic striker anyway. If Bayern does decide to cash in on Lewandowski next summer, though, then a move to Werner would make a lot of sense.
