Robert Lewandowski has no regrets after failing to secure a move away from Bayern Munich this summer and is feeling good in the Bavarian capital.

Robert Lewandowski couldn’t keep his name out of the headlines this past summer, as he and his agent Pini Zahavi reportedly pushed for a transfer out of Bayern Munich. The club ultimately stood firm, however, and didn’t entertain offers for their talismanic striker. Club higher-ups Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were eager to show that the club is bigger than the player.

Lewandowski hasn’t had the best start to the new season, though he remains Bayern’s top scorer. He has been an isolated figure up top, largely starved of touches or many goal-scoring opportunities.

It seems like Bayern’s plan to keep hold of their striker against his wishes might backfire. Lewandowski has assured the fans that he is very happy with life at Bayern, though. The Polish striker told Sport Bild that the team’s success is his priority, not individual accolades.

"“I definitely feel very happy and well in Munich.“I do my best for the team to win. But it’s still about the team, because everyone works hard for success here. It’s not just me, not just Robert Lewandowski.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Lewandowski hired Pini Zahavi to engineer a move away from Bayern earlier this year. Zahavi publicly announced that Lewandowski did want to leave the club at the end of last season. Niko Kovac also confirmed that the striker put in a transfer request, but the Croatian reaffirmed that Bayern had no interest in selling him.

The Pole reportedly wanted to seal his dream move to Real Madrid. Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Juventus couldn’t cause Real Madrid to have concrete interest in Lewandowski, though.

Manchester United, Paris-Saint Germain and Chelsea were loosely linked with Lewandowski. These destinations would have been financially beneficial for the striker, but on the sporting front it didn’t make sense.

Lewandowski’s performance levels drastically dipped after speculation surrounding his future began at the start of 2018. The former Borussia Dortmund striker ended the season as club’s top scorer, but delivered very meek performances in the games against Real Madrid. He was given the reputation of a flat track bully who rarely turns up against the giants of Europe.

His performances at the World Cup gathered more criticism. Lewandowski felt very little support from the club during this barrage of criticism from the media. The striker reportedly wanted to hold talks with the club at the start of this season to seek more support in such situations. He might be relieved after seeing Bayern’s monumental press conference last week, in which The club hierarchy defended their German players after a couple of poor results with the national team. Lewandowski will be hoping that he receives similar support when he goes through a similar rough patch of form.

Bayern Munich might have missed the opportunity to cash in for Lewandowski this past summer. They’re unlikely to receive much of a fee for him in the future. This move of defiance will be justified if Lewandowski remains the focal point of Bayern’s attack throughout the next couple of years. He has reignited his scoring form after the international break, but he needs to keep it up for the rest of this season for Bayern to be successful.
