Bayern Munich have the goalkeeping department sorted for next season. After Manuel Neuer showed good form and fitness in November and December, Die Roten quickly agreed on a contract extension with him until 2025. Sven Ulreich signed a contract extension until 2025, giving Bayern short-term clarity over the goalkeeping department.

The Bavarian club is now focussing on the long-term plans in the goalkeeping position. Bayern are planning to hold contract talks with Alexander Nubel in April. Nubel is currently enjoying a good loan spell at VfB Stuttgart.

The former Schalke goalkeeper’s good form with Stuttgart has not gone unnoticed across Europe. According to TSF Studio (via iMiaSanMia), Sporting Lisbon’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, is keen on signing Nubel in the summer. The Portuguese coach has been impressed with Nubel’s shot-stopping and passing qualities.

Nubel is currently second in the Bundesliga for clean sheets this season. His good performances in the goal have helped Stuttgart’s push for European football next campaign. Sporting Lisbon will not be the only club showing interest in Nubel if he is on the market when the transfer window opens in June.

Bayern consider Nubel a strong candidate to be Neuer’s long-term successor. They are ready to hand him a new deal and sort out a loan for the next campaign. Nubel is open to signing a new contract with record Bundesliga champions provided he becomes the club’s number one goalkeeping option when Neuer’s contract expires in 2025.

Neuer will be 39 when his current deal expires at Bayern. The Bavarian club needs to have a succession plan in place since it is likely to be Neuer’s last contract in Munich unless he is content with the role of second-choice goalkeeper in the final years of his career. In Nubel, they have a solid player who is going to enter the peak years of his career.

In an ideal scenario, Bayern agree to a three-year deal with Nubel and send him back to Stuttgart for another season on loan. Stuttgart are expected to play in the Champions League next season. The Bavarian club will consider permanent offers for Nubel if he refuses to sign a contract extension. Die Roten may look to insert a buy-back clause in a permanent deal to safeguard themselves for the future.

Apart from Nubel, Bayern also need to decide the short-term future of Daniel Peretz. He has started only one game this season. A loan spell for the 23-year-old goalkeeper is on the horizon in the summer.
