Bayern Munich will work on several aspects of squad building over the next few months. Along with working on transfers, Bayern are also looking to secure the future of first-team players who can play a crucial role for the team in the long term.

Alexander Nubel is one of the several Bayern players with 15 months left on their contracts. The German goalkeeper is having a fine loan spell with VfB Stuttgart. He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season. Stuttgart are open to signing Nubel on a permanent deal, but Bayern have different plans for the former Schalke shot-stopper.

Die Roten want to extend Nubel’s contract and loan him out for next season. The German champions consider Nubel one of the strong candidates to become Neuer’s successor. It does look like Nubel is ready to sign a contract extension at Bayern if one particular condition is satisfied.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, Alexander Nubel is open to extending his stay in Munich if he becomes the number one goalkeeping option at the club from the 2025/26 season. The talks between Nubel and Bayern are scheduled to take place in April.

Neuer’s new contract will expire at the end of next season. Nubel wants to become Bayern’s number one after next season, which is a fair demand considering how he has developed over the last three seasons. It makes no sense for him to spend the peak years of his career on the bench at Bayern.

After enduring a frustrating debut season at Bayern in 2020/21, Nubel went out on loan to Monaco for two years. He decided against a return to Munich in January 2023 when Bayern wanted to recall him from the loan spell due to Neuer’s serious leg injury. Nubel made it clear that he will not stay at Bayern if he is second choice goalkeeper. He was attracting interest from several clubs in the summer but eventually decided to go out on loan to Stuttgart.

Nubel’s decision to join Stuttgart has been vindicated. He is currently second for the number of clean sheets in the Bundesliga this season. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if several clubs come up with offers for Nubel in the summer.

Neuer will turn 39 by the time the 2024/25 season will come to an end. Bayern need to think long-term next summer and give Nubel an extended run in the starting XI. It will be an ideal time for Die Roten to go through the transition phase in the goalkeeping department.
