Real Madrid eye deal for Bayern Munich defender in January
It was a summer full of twists and turns when it comes to the future of Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich. The Canadian full-back ended up staying in Munich, but his future remains uncertain as he entered the final 12 months of his contract.
According to AS, Real Madrid believe that they have won the race to sign the Canadian full-back on a free transfer in the summer. They want to agree on contract terms with Davies when the winter transfer window opens at the start of January. Davies can negotiate with interested club in the winter since he will have only six months left on his contract at Bayern.
The Los Blancos were keen on signing Davies in the summer, but Bayern were not interested in a cut-price deal. Bayern never received a concrete offer from Real Madrid for the 23-year-old left-back. Davies is expected to play an important role under Vincent Kompany this season despite the uncertainty regarding his future.
Bayern had opened contract talks with Davies last season. They had issued a deadline to accept their contract offer in March. However, Bayern were thinking about improving the offer in the summer. Max Eberl was open to discussing improved terms, but the club hierarchy reportedly pulled the plug on contract talks.
Die Roten are comfortable with Davies starting the season with 12 months left on his contract. They have not completely closed the door on a contract renewal, but talks will have to restart with the player’s representatives sooner rather than later.
Mixed start to the season for Alphonso Davies
After a challenging 2023/24 campaign, Davies is looking to get back to his best under Kompany. However, it has not been the best of the starts to the campaign for the 23-year-old left-back.
Davies started against Wolfsburg on matchday one, but he remained an unused substitute against Freiburg in the second game. Raphael Guerreiro could keep his place in the team against Holstein Kiel on matchday three. Davies will have to work hard to reclaim the spot in the starting XI.
It is a pity that Bayern could lose a player of Davies’ quality on a free transfer. They need clarity about his future sooner rather than later. A final decision will also help the player to concentrate better on the pitch amidst intense speculation. The Bavarian faithful will hope Davies ends up signing a new deal. If he doesn’t, then fans will like to see him end his time in Munich with a final flourish. The Canadian will have to make the most of the opportunities he will get in the coming weeks.
