Bayern Munich had a torrid time finding a replacement for Thomas Tuchel during the second half of last season. They missed out on their top three targets (Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, and Ralf Rangnick). Bayern eventually decided to go ahead with the appointment of Vincent Kompany.

Before approaching Kompany for the head coach role, Bayern also explored a move for Crystal Palace’s head coach, Oliver Glasner. The Austrian head coach previously enjoyed success at Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to England. He made a strong impression at Crystal Palace during the second half of last season.

Glasner’s teams play an attractive style of football, which explains Bayern’s interest in him to replace Tuchel. However, Crystal Palace were not ready to entertain offers for Glasner. They reportedly wanted €100 million for Glasner, which ruled out a move to Munich for the Austrian coach.

While talking to the media over the weekend (via Sky Sports), Uli Hoeness confirmed Glasner’s desire to complete a switch to Bayern. The Austrian coach was very eager to join Bayern after holding positive talks with the club chiefs.

"We spoke with Glasner, who we also liked. He was very keen on joining FC Bayern, absolutely keen. But his club did not release him, and FC Bayern is not all-powerful either."

After Crystal Palace shut the door for Glasner’s exit, Bayern also tried to convince Tuchel to stay until the end of his contract. However, they failed to reach an agreement with the German coach. Tuchel was linked with a move to Manchester United, but the Premier League side decided to stick with Erik ten Hag.

Die Roten eventually turned their attention to Vincent Kompany after the end of the Bundesliga. They quickly agreed terms with the Belgian coach, but the negotiations with Burnley took some time. Kompany is a massive gamble for Bayern, but his work at Burnley was impressive. The Premier League side played an attractive style of football under him.

Kompany faces a big challenge this season as he looks to bring the silverware back to Bayern next season. Die Roten will have to show patience with Kompany since it will take some time for him to implement his philosophy. The Belgian coach comes to Bayern at a challenging time when the club hierarchy is looking to make big changes in the squad. Kompany’s first competitive game as Die Roten’s head coach will be against Ulm in DFB Pokal on August 16.
