Bayern Munich have been swift in the summer when it comes to strengthening the defense. They have already completed a deal for Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart, while talks continue with Bayer Leverkusen for Jonathan Tah. Bayern will look to sell a couple of central defenders to make space for two arrivals.

Matthijs de Ligt is the leading contender in defense to leave Bayern this summer. The Bavarian club may have got the first serious suitor for the Dutch defender. According to The Athletic, Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Matthijs de Ligt.

The English club has not opened talks with Bayern, but the interest in concrete. Manchester United want to add at least one central defender to the squad after the departure of Raphael Varane. They had a bid worth £43 million (including add-ons) rejected for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

Manchester United were linked with De Ligt at the start of the winter transfer window. The English club has been tracking the Dutch defender’s progress since his time at Ajax. In his column for Caught Offside, SportBild’s Christian Falk reported that Bayern are looking for offers worth €70 million for De Ligt. However, Manchester United are ready to pay only half of Die Roten’s valuation.

Sky Sports in Germany has also reported that Manchester United’s interest in De Ligt is getting concrete. The Dutch defender’s future will be resolved after the Euros. The concrete steps toward a departure will be taken once De Ligt holds talks with Vincent Kompany and Bayern.

Die Roten will receive offers from other clubs if De Ligt decides to leave Munich. The Dutch defender doesn’t want to be a third or fourth-choice center-back at the club. With the arrival of Tah and Ito, De Ligt is not guaranteed to play every weekend. Despite being content with life in Munich, the Dutch defender will look for a transfer if he is not given assurances over game time.

Paris Saint-Germain can be Manchester United’s biggest competitor for De Ligt. The French club reportedly inquired about De Ligt at the end of the winter transfer window. A bidding war will be the ideal scenario for Bayern.

A move to Old Trafford will be an ideal transfer for De Ligt since he will be reunited with Erik Ten Hag. The Dutch manager got the best out of De Ligt at Ajax. Moreover, he will play week in and week out at Manchester United.
