"Incomprehensible" - Bayern Munich surprised by Jamal Musiala being left out of Ballon d'Or shortlist

Bayern Muich boss Max Eberl has admitted his surprise after Jamal Musiala was left out of the 30-player shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d'Or award.

The nominations for the Ballon d'Or award were announced on Wednesday, as Jamal Musiala was surprisingly left out of the 30-player shortlist for the prestigious honor. The attacking midfielder had a strong season with Bayern Munich and was also one of the top performers at the European Championship this summer.

But Musiala's performances were seemingly not enough to earn him a place on the 30-player shortlist for the Ballon d'Or, which is presented by French magazine France Football.

Max Eberl has now had his say on Musiala's omission, and has stated his surprise at the 21 year old being left out. "We at FC Bayern are very surprised that Jamal Musiala is missing from the [Ballon d'Or] list," Eberl told DPA. "Jamal was one of the outstanding players at the Euros, was voted into the best XI and was one of the tournament's top scorers."

"FC Bayern also reached the semifinals of the Champions League thanks to Jamal's great performances. The fact that he is now not even among the 30 best players of the past season is completely incomprehensible to us."

"In our eyes, Jamal is one of the most fascinating players in international football with absolutely extraordinary, unique skills. We are very proud of what he does for FC Bayern and also for the national team."

Jamal Musiala scored 12 goals and assisted a further eight in 38 appearances across all competitions last season for Bayern Munich. He was also the joint-top scorer at Euro 2024, having found the back of the net on three occasions for the Germany national team at the tournament.

Harry Kane is the only Bayern Munich player on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or award. Highly rated forward Mathys Tel has been nominated for the Kopa Trophy, an award given to the best performing young player of the season.
