The 2023/24 campaign was difficult for Bayern Munich as they failed to win a single trophy. They finished third in the Bundesliga title and got eliminated in the early stages of the DFB Pokal. The UEFA Champions League campaign was fruitful for Bayern, but they suffered a narrow defeat against Real Madrid in the semi-final.

While Bayern didn’t win silverware last season, they did manage to get the best out of a couple of young players in the squad. Aleksandar Pavlović enjoyed a breakthrough season for Bayern. The young midfielder also earned a call-up to the national team due to his performances at the club level.

Matthys Tel also took his game to the next level last season. The French winger didn’t start many games but made a significant impact through his cameos. Tel had 14 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Courtesy of impressive performances for Bayern, Tel is nominated for the 2024 Kopa Trophy.

Tel may not be the favourite to win this trophy due to the presence of impressive Lamine Yamal in the list. However, the French forward has done enough last season to get nominated in the top 10 list of the Kopa Trophy. It will not be a big surprise if Tel finishes in the top five when the results are out.

Mathys Tel set for a bigger role at Bayern this season

Tel was frustrated with the lack of starts under Thomas Tuchel despite making a significant impact during cameos off the bench. The German coach believed that Tel’s development would be better served by getting minutes off the bench.

Bayern have big plans with Tel on a medium and long-term basis. He is considered one of the best-attacking prospects in Europe. The Bavarian club’s faith in the teenager was shown in the contract extension earlier this year. Amidst interest from Manchester United, Bayern convinced Tel that his long-term future lies in Munich. The French forward will get more game time under Vincent Kompany this season.

Die Roten didn’t replace Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the summer. Tel will be used as the backup striker when Harry Kane is rested. The French winger is also expected to start on the left flank regularly. Mathys Tel should look to score more than 20 goals this season since his game time will be significantly improved under the new coach. If he continues to deliver for Bayern, a call-up to the senior French squad will come sooner rather than later.
