Harry Kane's wait for a first major trophy goes on after England were handed a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat by Spain in the final of the European Championship on Sunday.

Mikel Oyarzabal came off the bench and scored the winning goal in the 86th minute as England fell narrowly short in their quest to end their trophy draught. Nico Williams had earlier given Spain the lead soon after the start of the second-half, before Cole Palmer got England back on level terms.

Harry Kane started up front for England once again but had a game to forget and was taken off at the hour mark. The game capped off a rather disappointing Euro 2024 for the Bayern Munich striker, who appeared to be slightly off the pace despite scoring a tournament-high three goals.

Trophy draught goes on for Harry Kane

The defeat means that Kane's wait to win a trophy goes on despite his incredible goalscoring feats. The 30 year old said after the game that the defeat will sting for a long time to come. "This was another tough moment for the team and for me personally," Kane told the BBC after the game.

"It was a tough tournament physically and mentally. You get so close to the highest of the highs, the pinnacle of our careers, and now everyone is at the lowest of the lows. We haven't found a way to win that trophy and it is going to hurt for a long time."

Harry Kane will now look to recover from this defeat quickly with the start of the new season just one month away. After failing to win any trophies during his first season with Bayern Munich, Kane will be eager to lead their charge for the Bundesliga and Champions League during the upcoming campaign.
