Bayern Munich have not lost many games this season, but they have suffered big defeats that have dented their chances of retaining the Bundesliga title. They have conceded a lot of goals in defeats, which highlights the vulnerability in defense. Bayern found the right balance in attack and defense in the last seven days during the big wins against Lazio and Mainz.

Thomas Tuchel is currently using the center-back partnership of Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt. Both players have done well over the last few games, giving Bayern good balance in and out of defense. The German coach is expected to stick with this pairing over the next few games.

Dayot Upamecano was a key player for Bayern and Tuchel during Hinrunde. The French defender currently finds a place on the bench after red cards in back-to-back games against Lazio and Bochum. He was an unused substitute against Mainz on Saturday.

Upamecano has struggled to deliver consistent performances over an entire campaign since joining Bayern in 2022. Despite the recent struggles, the French defender is not considering a move away from Bavaria. While talking to Kicker, Upamecano insisted that he is expected to stay in Munich beyond the summer.

" "No, not at all. I have a contract until 2026, I feel good at the club and with my teammates. I want to stay here at FC Bayern and will keep pushing.""

Bayern were pushing for the signing of Ronald Araujo from FC Barcelona in the winter transfer window. The Uruguayan defender and Barcelona were not looking for a transfer midway through the season. Die Roten also made a late move for Radu Dragusin, but the Romanian defender opted for a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bavarian club eventually settled with Eric Dier on a short-term deal. The English defender has activated a clause in his contract to extend his stay in Munich at least until the end of next season. Bayern are expected to explore a move for Araujo in the summer. They have also been linked with Benfica’s Antonio Silva.

In the event of another center-back arrival in the summer, there could be departures in this position. Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano may face uncertain future. The Dutch defender is reportedly open to exit if he is the third or fourth choice center-back option. It does look like Upamecano will be ready to fight for a place in the team instead of looking for a transfer.

The new coach will have a big say on the future of defenders in the squad. With the club chiefs keen on a squad upheaval in the summer, it will be intriguing to see how they strengthen the defense.
