Bayern Munich will be busy in the transfer window after a dismal campaign. The Bavarian club is planning several changes in the squad. Bayern will raise funds for the squad overhaul by listening to offers for several senior players in the team.
According to Bild, Dayot Upamecano is the prime candidate to leave Bayern in the defensive department. The Bavarian club was not satisfied with Upamecano’s performances from last season. The Premier League can be a potential destination for Upamecano since he was heavily linked with Manchester United before moving to Bavaria.
Upamecano had a mixed campaign last season. He was part of Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice center-back partnership during the first half of the season. The French defender formed a solid partnership with Kim Min-jae.
The Ruckrunde was opposite of Hinrunde for Upamecano. He was sent off in two consecutive games in February, which effectively cost him a place in the starting XI for the rest of the season. Tuchel was content with the center-back partnership of Matthijs de Ligt and Eric Dier for the last three months of the season.
Upamecano has been inconsistent for Bayern since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021. He has a good run of performances every season but makes mistakes in crucial big games during the second half of the season. The French defender is yet to have good consistent performances across a full campaign for Bayern.
The 25-year-old defender will reportedly hold talks with the club chiefs in the summer after spending the majority of the second half of the season on the bench. With two years left on his contract, the upcoming summer transfer window is the right time for Bayern to part ways with Upamecano.
In terms of squad planning in defense, Bayern will stick with Eric Dier, Matthijs de Ligt, and Kim Min-jae for next season. De Ligt had a strong second half of the season. The Dutchman has no plans to leave Bavaria. Eric Dier activated a clause in his contract to stay at Bayern until the end of next season by playing regularly under Tuchel. Kim Min-jae had a rough second half of the season, but he is determined to bounce back next campaign.
Bayern have already agreed personal terms with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah. The German defender is Die Roten’s prime target to strengthen the defense, while RB Salzburg’s Oumar Solet is the alternative option. Upamecano’s departure will make space for the new central defender in the squad.
