Bayern Munich reject chance to sign Chelsea star
Bayern Munich are not expected to sign players before next Friday’s deadline in the summer transfer window. Max Eberl has repeatedly insisted that the squad is set for the season, barring any major developments in the next week. Despite the reluctance shown by Bayern to make more signings, agents will offer players to the club in the coming days.
According to Bild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern have rejected the chance to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea. The English winger was offered to Die Roten after Chelsea told him to leave before the end of the transfer window.
Bayern wanted to strengthen the attack by signing Désiré Doué from Rennes. However, the French winger decided to join Paris Saint-Germain instead of moving to Bavaria. After missing out on Doué, Bayern have no plans to actively look for a forward as they will reassess the situation next summer.
Sterling has been one of the best players in the Premier League over the last decade, but he has struggled at Chelsea since leaving Manchester City in 2022. Moreover, Sterling will turn 30 later this year, which doesn’t fit the age profile Bayern are looking in wide players this summer.
From a financial point of view, it doesn’t make sense for Bayern to pursue the signing of Sterling. Chelsea will command a sizeable fee for the England international. Moreover, Sterling will also distort the wage structure at Die Roten as he reportedly earns over £300k per week at Chelsea.
Bayern have big plans for attack next summer
Bayern had explored moves for Xavi Simons and Désiré Doué this summer after signing Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. Simons ended up joining RB Leipzig on loan, while Doué joined PSG. The Bavarian club will look at Simons again next summer, but their top target for attack will be Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
Die Roten have shown concrete interest in Wirtz for several years. The German attacking midfielder is expected to leave Leverkusen next summer for a big fee. The Bavarian club will hope to win the race for one of the most coveted attackers in Europe, which explains their reluctance to sign another attacking player before the deadline day this summer.
The record Bundesliga champions may start to make space for Wirtz in the wage bill and squad this summer. They are open to selling Kingsley Coman in the final seven days of the window. The French winger is in no rush to leave Bavaria as he will consider only top projects that give him a chance to compete for the biggest trophies.
