Bayern Munich are not expected to look for a new goalkeeper in the transfer market anytime soon. The Bavarian club took crucial steps in the last six months to bring short-term and long-term stability in the goalkeeping department.
Manuel Neuer made his much-awaited return to action in October after spending ten months on the sidelines due to a leg injury. The experienced German goalkeeper steadily got back to his best this season. Bayern handed him a one-year contract extension in December.
Along with Neuer, Bayern also extended Sven Ulreich’s contract until 2025. Ulreich did a fine job of deputizing Neuer when he missed the start of the season. The Bavarian club strengthened the goalkeeping department in the summer by signing Daniel Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Bayern also found a way to extend Alexander Nubel’s contract until 2029. The former Schalke goalkeeper will spend the next two seasons on loan at VfB Stuttgart. He is tipped to succeed at Neuer at Bayern. While talking to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Oliver Kahn insisted that Nubel has the necessary qualities to succeed Neuer at the Bavarian club.
""Replacing Manuel Neuer is a huge task. The past has shown how difficult it can be to follow in the footsteps of such players. I really like Alex Nübel at Stuttgart. He's showing that he can be a player for FC Bayern.""Oliver Kahn
Nubel joined Bayern from Schalke on a free transfer in 2020. After spending his first season on the bench, he went on loan to Monaco for two seasons. Nubel got consistent playing time at the French club. The Bavarian club tried to recall Nubel from the loan spell in January due to Neuer’s leg injury, but he decided to stay in Monaco until the end of the season.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper had no plans to stay in Munich unless he got assurances over playing time. Bayern agreed a loan deal with VfB Stuttgart last summer. The move to Stuttgart has helped Nubel to take his game to the next level.
Nubel has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season. The German goalkeeper is second on the list for most clean sheets in the Bundesliga this campaign. His performances have helped Stuttgart to push for a place in the next season’s Champions League.
The former Schalke goalkeeper wants to be the number one at Bayern. It does look like he got assurances of getting that opportunity down the line. Neuer will be 39 by the time his contract expires in 2025. Bayern have the break clause in the loan deal at Stuttgart. It will not be a big surprise if Nubel returns to Munich next summer and starts the 2025/26 campaign as number one at Bayern.
