Bayern Munich keeping tabs on England’s Euro 2024 star
After a difficult season in the defensive area of the pitch, Bayern Munich have been aggressively looking to improve their options in defense for next season. The Bavarian club has already signed Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart, while a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah remains plausible.
Apart from Tah and Ito, Bayern have been closely following the situation of several center-backs in Europe. According to Sky Sports in the UK, Bayern are one of the several clubs that have heavily scouted Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The English defender has two years left on his contract at Crystal Palace.
Guehi excelled at Euro 2024, helping England reach the final of the competition. Despite Die Roten keenly following Guehi’s progress over the last season, a transfer is unlikely to take place this summer. Crystal Palace will demand a fee close to £60-70 million for the in-form English defender. Die Roten cannot commit that kind of outlay on a defender despite having a good relationship with Crystal Palace after negotiating a deal for Michael Olise earlier in the summer transfer window.
Bayern had the first bid rejected for Tah. The German defender has already agreed personal terms with the Bavarian club. The record Bundesliga champions do not want to pay a big fee for Tah since he has one year left on his contract at Bayer Leverkusen.
Die Roten need a big sale in the defensive department to make space for Tah. Matthijs de Ligt is the prime candidate for sale in this position, but a move away from Bavaria may not materialize quickly for the Dutch defender. Manchester United looked set to be the destination for De Ligt, but the Premier League club completed a move for Leny Yoro on Thursday. The signing of Yoro can jeopardize De Ligt’s move to the Old Trafford.
Dayot Upamecano is another candidate for sale in defense at Bayern. The French international will sit down with the club chiefs to get clarity about his role in the squad once he returns from vacation. Upamecano became fourth choice center-back at Die Roten during the second half of the last season.
The next few weeks will decide whether Bayern manage to add another center-back to the squad this summer. They need to negotiate deals for outgoings before making a move for a new central defender. One thing is certain, the second central defensive signing for Die Roten will not be Guehi due to financial constraints.
